If you’re watching your figure this summer, I want you to know that you can still drink wine and look fine. With anything high in calories, moderation is key. As I discussed on Monday, a low calorie wine may be your best bet. This week, I decided to try a wine from reality star Bethany Frankel’s Skinnygirl collection for #WineWednesday.

If you aren’t familiar with Bethany, she’s a cast member on the Real Housewives of New York. I’d heard of the Skinnygirl brand before, but honestly didn’t take it too seriously. No shade, but it sounded pretty gimmicky to me. I just pictured Skinnygirl as a wine that really highfalutin women would drink because they didn’t want to waste calories on alcohol. And for that reason, low calorie wine seemed pretty fetch and all I could think of was the clip below from Mean Girls…

Sorry low calorie wine…I was a young moscato drinking girl back then. I’ve matured since then ;) As I embark on this wine journey, I’m open to trying different types of wine. So, let’s see if Skinnygirl wine is worth your dime.

Ty’s Takeaways…

Okay, so let’s start with the calories in this bad boy or should I say girl? Skinnygirl California White has 100 calories. Remember, a standard five-to-six ounce glass of wine can average 120-130 calories, but that depends on how much alcohol is in the wine. Soooo, when you think about it, a glass of Skinnygirl is like eating one of those Nabisco 100 calories snack packs. Just saying…you choose your calories. #teamliquids

Skinnygirl California White is pale yellow with very sweet aromas. I got hints of peach and nectar, and even a little bit of a floral scent. Surprisingly, the initial taste was good…very crisp. I could taste the fruit. For a minute, it almost tasted like a Sauvignon Blanc…but those 60 seconds soon faded as I was left with a very a tangy bitterness in my mouth. I found the wine to have a weird after taste. However, I tried to look past this flaw and give it a chance.

Overall, Skinnygirl California White was good, but not great. I can look past the bitter after taste, but it didn’t make a lasting impression. It kind of reminds me of that guy you’re dating who is genuinely a good person, but when you think of the bigger picture he’s just not “the one.” I probably wouldn’t buy Skinnygirl California White again, but I’d be open to trying another wine from the Skinnygirl collection. There’s plenty of wine in this vineyard. You can see in the photo above, the collection consists of a California Red, Pinot Grigio, Prosecco, and even a Moscato wine. There’s bound to be a match that will fit your palate.

Overall Rating: 3 Corks

Buzzworthy: Skinnygirl California White contains 10 percent alcohol. Most wines have an ABV of 12-15 percent. Remember that in order for this wine to be low in calories, the alcohol content has to be lower. But, don’t let this Skinnygirl fool you, she can get pretty turned up. I was definitely feeling tipsy after one glass. Hmm…maybe I should stick to the five-ounce pour rule…lol. I know, I know…wine is all about taste and not about getting a buzz, but I’m not your typical wine blogger. So, Skinnygirl California White gets my buzzworthy stamp of approval. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
